Polypropylene (Olefin) is an increasingly popular synthetic fibre for floor covers. Due to its chemically inert nature, and the difficulty in the dying process, polypropylene carpets and rugs have a strong colour fastness. They do not fade and are highly stain resistant, therefore can very easily be cleaned using bleach and other household products. They do, however, need to be vacuumed regularly in order to retain their appearance, as they can flatten easily with regular use. Still, polypropylene carpets are far cheaper than many other fibres, and are very durable.
Polyester rugs are soft to the touch, anti-allergenic, and easily cleaned unless it is an oil-based stain. Used extensively for Shaggy rugs, the fibre dyes well, and can be spun into thick chunky yarns to produce heavy pile weights. The fibre is often blended with other fibres, including polypropylene and wool.
